Your cloud bill is a design document

CLOUD

Most teams read the cloud bill once a month, wince, and move on. Read it as an architecture review instead and it becomes one of the most honest documents you have.

Cost is a shadow of design

A line item that grows faster than your traffic is usually a design smell — chatty services, idle capacity reserved “just in case,” egress between regions that should never talk. The bill surfaces these before any diagram does.

Three questions per top cost

For each of your five largest line items, ask: is this load real, is it in the right place, and is it the right shape (right instance, right tier, right commitment)? FinOps isn’t about cutting until it hurts — it’s about paying only for the architecture you actually meant to build.
